Dr. Josep Maria Cols Baquès' equipment
Dr. Rosa Camprubí Forner has donated a portable
anaesthesia device she was presented with by her teacher,
anaesthesiologist Dr. Josep Maria Cols Baquès, born
on 1915. Dr. Cols studied with Dr. José Miguel Martínez,
anaesthesia pioneer in Catalonia, in the service created on
1941 at Santa Creu y Sant Pau’s Hospital. This device
is part of a line of practice begun with Louis Ombrédanne’s
mask, followed later on by the OMO and closed with this instrument
in the 1960s. The portable nature of the device illustrates
aspects regarding the beginning of professionalization of
anaesthesiology, as well as the difficulties to establish
permanent clinical and hospital centres and the anaesthesiologist’s
obligation to acquire equipment in order to carry it from
clinic to clinic as required by surgeons.
