history
The Museum of the History of Medicine of Catalonia was founded
in Barcelona in 1979 and was officially inaugurated in 1981,
on its address at Passatge Mercader, 11. The Museum remained
open until 1995, when it was closed to the public, though
never stopped working on collection development and preservation
tasks, as well as in collaborations, enquiries, research and
organization of permanent and temporary exhibits. Museum collections
have constantly been increased through the years, so that
the building has become insufficient to hold the more than
6,000 objects that make up its collections. It was due to
space reasons that the Museum closed its doors to the public
and remained pending to be reopened in new premises allowing
proper showing of its rich heritage.
