The Museum of History of Medicine of Catalonia bases its rich
collections on the disinterested collaboration of many professionals
of Catalan medicine and on many generous gifts such as scientific
objects and documentation coming from private collections
and medical institutions. This collection is structured into
four sections: the
collection of instruments and objects, the
professional historical archive, the
collection of historical pictures and the
historical-medical and scientific museological library.
These sources have been put together over the years, in a
still implemented effort, from an exhaustive campaign to retrieve
instruments, objects, books, documentation and other materials
coming from Catalan private and institutional donations, and
from rescue operations of a heritage at serious risk of disappearance
or of entering the international antique trade net.
This policy has yielded the configuration of an outstanding
museum collection which allows the reconstruction of the history
of Catalan medicine and, subsequently, of modern and contemporary
history of medicine, between the 18th Century and the end
of the 20th Century. In this sense, the Museum heritage allows
to locate within a historical context the evolution of health
sciences and to interpret its meaning through available museum
resources.
