Objects explaining each of these areas also tell us about
the historical evolution of medicine in Catalonia, as well
as about some of the institutions that became centres of production,
emulation or transmission of scientific knowledge. Thus, the
creation of the Royal School of Surgery of Barcelona by the
end of the 18th Century and the objects from this institution
allow us to know about the development of human descriptive
and surgical anatomy, as well as the reception of a comparative
anatomy from an evolutionist basis. Anatomical preparations
acquired or built from this institution or from the Anatomical
Museum of the Faculty of Medicine of Barcelona also illustrate
on the topographical possibilities of this means to represent
the human body.
