The collection of instruments and objects of the Museum comprises
the long period between the end of the 18th Century and the
end of the 20th Century. That is, the crucial period of transformation
of medicine, and the acquisition of a scientific methodology
resembling that of other experimental disciplines, as well
as the consolidation of a way to explain the human body and
the pairing health-illness.
This collection can be structured according to distinct
areas of study of the human organism, according to regular
and pathologic perspectives, and considering contemporary
medical evolution: the discovery of human structure through
descriptive, surgical and pathological anatomy, and the development
of regular and pathologic microscopy, the new studies on human
biology that consolidated the bases of modern embryology,
the instrumental basis that allowed the tracing of the evolution
of clinical semiology, the establishment of laboratory medicine
through the development of experimental physiology and bacteriology.
