detection of disease by means of sound
The human organism stopped being a closed book by means of
the technical changes related to anatomical clinical mentality.
Auscultation technical percussion, immediate or armed, introduced
another path into clinical observation. A true transformation
of the relationship between physician and patient took place
from the development of the stethoscope, thus allowing establishing
diagnostics by relating certain inner anatomical injuries,
above all those related to heart and lung diseases, with specific
auscultation sounds.
The Museum collection shows the evolution of these earliest
instrumental explorations, from stethoscopes to phonendoscopes,
pleximeters, as well as exploratory methods based upon percussion,
from hammers to tuning forks.
