disease and objectivity: stereoscopy
Stereoscopy, developed in the middle of the 19th Century,
is based upon the idea of binocular vision, thus showing that
the sensation of solidity is achieved through the combination
in the brain of two separated flat images, each seen through
a different eye. Stereoscopic instrumental and photographs
had a remarkable diffusion in Catalonia at the end of the
century: both as therapeutic materials for the correction
of ocular disorders and as a means to register pathologies.
The collection of instruments, based upon Javal and Schiötz’s
models, and of stereoscopic prints from distinct medical specialties
conserved in the Museum is quite significant.
