laboratory medicine
The laboratory, as it had been for the dissection room, became
the place for experimentation that allowed reaching beyond
disease observation in hospitals. From a controlled environment,
the aim was to observe and measure everything by means of
microscopy, vivisection or chemical research, in order to
ascertain the diagnosis of diseases.
Hygrometers, barometers, thermometers, burners, scales, stills,
centrifuges, autoclaves, heaters, vacuometers, or manometers
were some of the necessary instruments to control conditions
for experimental work that can be found at the Museum.
Chemical and physical signs of disease oriented research towards
the analysis of certain substances, such as blood or urine.
The instrumental at the Museum allows the follow-up of the
evolution of research form distinct devices, such as colorimeter,
polarimeter, saccharimeter, haemometer, densitometer, viscosimeter,
spectrometer, or photocolorimeter.
