physiological-pathological semiology
The approach to disease from the study of dysfunctions or
disorders of physiological functions was distinctive of the
physiological-pathological mentality established through the
19th Century. The understanding of those functions as material
or energetic processes required the concurrence of theories
and technical resources from physics and chemistry.
The physiological-pathological signs have an outstanding representation
in the instrumental collection of the Museum. From the study
of the concept and the measurement of body temperature to
the reduction of organic dysfunctions to graphics, thus highlighting
sphygmometry, electrocardiography, electroencephalography,
or spirometry.
