medical specialties
The establishment of medical specialties took place as a consequence
of the development of diagnosis techniques and, in some cases,
surgical techniques, which allowed the autonomy and institutionalisation
of specific areas of medical sciences. Gradually, this was
the case of ophthalmology, urology, otorhinolaryngology, tissiology,
endocrinology, neurology, cardiology, dermatology or anaesthesiology
among others.
The collection of instruments of the Museum illustrates this
phenomenon of constitution of medical specialties in Catalonia.
As an example, in ophthalmology, from the 18th-Century’s
collection of eyes to the 20th-Century’s surgical and
exploratory instrumental, through assorted devices, such as
the optometer, the ophthalmometer, the refractometer, the
pupilometer, the campimeter, the tonometer, the estesiometer
or the ophthalmodynamometer. An evolutionary journey that
the Museum collection also allows following with other medical
specialties.
