surgery
The surgical material of the Museum illustrates the concurrence
of aims of a surgery interested in the removal of injuries
and the correction of disorders, as well as the great changes
that took place in this field regarding the fight against
its three great enemies: pain, haemorrhage, and infection.
The evolution of surgical anaesthesia, by means of inhalation
of volatile substances, of techniques such as hemostasy and
hemotherapy, and of technologies allowing the development
of concepts such as antisepsis and asepsy, have a place among
the devices preserved at the Museum. Major abdominal, thoracic,
or neurological surgery was thus facilitated.
The 20th Century has introduced important technological transformations
in the surgical field, especially in relation to heart surgery
and transplants, about which the Museum offers a representation.
