anatomy

The description of organic forms, aim of both descriptive and topographic or surgical anatomy, constitutes one of the foundations for modern medical knowledge. The methodology and sequence of morphological display has gone together with distinct ways of representation of the human body throughout history, often as a complementary tool to dissection of human corpses. The description of those usages was rearranged according to a new basis established through the combination of comparative anatomy and the evolutionary theory from the last third of the 19th Century.

The anatomical preparations, natural and artificial, normal and pathological, held by the Museum, and made in different materials, show the process of consolidation of that display method, an unequivocal pedagogical character, complementary to dissection rooms, as well as the renewing viewpoint coming from surgery schools.
